FTC, De Beers and Lab Gemstones

FTC is part of this but not like I usually write about. The latest scams afoot. This pertains to the jewelry guidelines FTC has placed on the jewelry industry or to anyone selling a piece of jewelry like on a website. In other words FTC is saying tell the truth, now isn’t that a novel idea.  As stated before FTC wants the consumer to get a fair shake and that includes buying jewelry. download (5)

You can’t lie about what metal is being used, or what gemstone it is , and what type of treatment did the stone receive. These have to be divulged to the consumer. If you think this happens everyday think again.

At the moment I am going to give you an example of what I see everyday. A nice little old lady from the East Coast is selling some very nice items on a website I will not name, and she is touting a vintage ring that belonged to her great grandmother and it has this bright blue stone set in it that has not received any treatment. There are two things wrong with this scenario, if this is a vintage ring from let’s say the 20’s or 30’s, the stone she calls a Tanzanite was not discovered until 1967 and every Tanzanite has received heat treatment to give it that gorgeous purple/blue so admired by gem collectors. Tanzanite is not neon blue. Someone is going to pay $375.00 plus her outrageous shipping charge of $15.00 for a 3 oz package and never bother with having it checked out and this customer has been bamboozled.. That is not right by any stretch of the imagination. That is what FTC is saying to anyone who sells jewelry, tell the truth. The flip side is if someone takes it to their jeweler and the info she stated is a lie, this will come back to bite, and if the info is made public which it would be she has really damaged her reputation for the future and what items she has sold, well these customers make take their items to a jeweler to validate what they purchased. It seems to be a new concept to tell the truth about what you are selling or FTC would not be busy 24 hours a day protecting consumers from sellers who lie about the items they are selling. I don’t care if it is an individual or a company.  I sell jewelry and I work at a jewelry store  and you can bet your bottom dollar it would never occur to me or to the store owner to lie about any item we have for sale. blue spinel 11 ct 12,800

We also have some sellers selling Mahaleo rubies, as if this was special. GIA does not even recognize this as a gemstone. Why, because it is lead filled and if the stone takes an accidental hit,  we now have ruby dust. These “stones” are red but to give the appearance of uniformity pump it with some lead to fill the fissures, and the color becomes a very pretty red ,even with some translucency, but we have sellers who are not divulging this information to customers who purchase them. The problem is it is not a genuine “ruby”. Now if the seller divulges all this and people buy them that is on the buyer as the information about the treatment of the stone has been divulged to him or her. mahleo ruby

Now on to lab stones. Lab grown stones have been around for quite sometime. The diamond cartel De Beers is going to be selling lab diamonds in blue, pink and white come September. The name of the company is Lightbox. The stones will be in  3 colors and a one carat stone will sell for $800.00 half carat $400.00 and down the line. They will have earrings, rings, pendants with these one carat stones and I have to say the stones are drop dead gorgeous. The impact this has had on all the lab growing diamond companies has been amusing. Remember De Beers is the big kahuna in the diamond world . As one long time veteran cutter said its like they are Elvis, If they smoke pot ,it gives everyone permission to smoke it. De Beers has just said without saying anything they approve of lab diamonds. pendant and earrings de beers lab

  • Now the FTC has shown a bit of favoritism towards lab gemstones. They dictated that the jewelers advertising “from the earth” stones can’t call them  natural diamonds and that is because lab gemstones test positive for diamond, emerald, whatever. They have the same optical and physical characteristics as the”from the ground stone”. This only added fuel to the fire for gemstone dealers dealing with from the earth gemstones. Now don’t get me wrong lab gemstones are not cheap and even GIA will grade them, but the fact remains they are cheaper than the from the ground stone. It makes stones more affordable for some who would never be able to afford even a one carat diamond. or a 4 carat sapphire., for example. And FTC also said the diamond merchants, or jewelers can’t call their stones eco friendly stones, they are to cease and desist now. There are quite a few jewelers and jewelry stores who are not happy with De Beers at this time. Just one of the reasons they are complaining is that De Beers is not including engagement ring in any part of their marketing.  That’s the big complaint? Why does every solitaire diamond have to be an engagement ring? Is there a rule book somewhere I don’t know about that  says only brides can wear a solitaire diamond, I have done it three times and it just didn’t take., now  I have a one carat solitaire that I wear as a “ring”. And somewhere in the fallout from the announcement about Lightbox, the CEO or another higher up said he would buy a lab stone for his daughter, And many in the jewelry industry just had a fit, an honest to goodness conniption fit and they went on and on about it. This is his company, do you think it wise to say something like, oh no I would never let my daughter wear one of our pink, blue or white lab diamonds. That’s a new marketing technique , speak badly about your product that is being released to the public in less than 30 days.  De Beers

So De Beers came out ahead again. The other lab diamonds are sold for more than $1000 a carat and now De Beers has the blue and pink diamonds which are stupid expensive in the real world, like does the Hope Diamond ring a bell, the one that  resides in a burglar proof glassed in case at the Smithsonian Institution valued at half a billion dollars. The colored diamonds are just plain rare and no one can afford them except the very few, the untreated ones that is. Those that have been treated are considerably less expensive, but they would still be far more than the Lightbox pink or blue one carat diamond. I am all for new technology especially this kind,  and the creation of lab stones has gotten more and more sophisticated. Check out the Chatham lab gemstones.

So all in all the lab gemstone just got the stamp of approval , and the truth is a jeweler with the naked eye can’t tell the difference between diamond, Moisannite, or a Russian cut lab diamond. It is not possible and more than one prominent jeweler in the US admitted this.We have some top of the line jewelry stores who have decided to carry lab stones and then we will have to wait and see if the company with the blue box will carry them as well. I have no doubt that some of the employees with this particular company would have their eyebrows permanently arched over the thought of carrying  lab diamonds or any other lab gemstone.lab pink diamond

I confess I am excited about Lightbox, I admit it, I guess I did not hide it very well. I can’t wait. I see them as a diamond from De Beers, it does not get any better than that. I know what you are thinking. I still can’t wait for Lightbox to open.

Stay safe out there,

Shirley

History of Jewels from India

Large flawless diamonds from the Golconda region. Rich green emeralds from Colombia. Blood-red rubies from Burma. Only the most visually striking  would do, set in only in the purest gold. For more than 5,000 years, jewelry has played an integral role in the history of India. Wars were fought and empires won and lost in pursuit of these riches. Yet, because of  cultural practices, relatively little of the historic jewelry exists, the gems and precious metals repurposed by succeeding generations.hindu gods

The jewels in “Centuries of Opulance: Jewels of India,” are on display in Carlsbad, GIA campus, and are on loan from a private collection until March, 2018. This is over 300 years of adornment from the 17th through the 20th century.

In fact, it was a thirst for the fabled riches of Northern India that drew Babur, the Muslim founder of the Mughal Empire, from Central Asia. Lavishly adorned with the jewels they had won, received as “gifts” or created from the vast stores of gems and gold in their treasuries, the Mughals and other rulers of India continued to honor the religious, metaphysical and social importance of the precious materials and the forms they took.blue and yellow sapphires

Intricately designed pieces celebrated Allah and Hindu gods, such as Shiva, Krishna and Vishnu. Other jewels were integral to the marriage contract, as seen in the elaborate wedding necklaces, in depictions of snakes or fish as symbols of fertility, and in nose rings worn as testament to happiness in the union. Brightly colored gems and enamel symbolized the forces of life: red as blood, the life force of the animal kingdom; green as the plant life created by the blue sky combined with the yellow sun. To this day in India, gems and jewelry carry potent messages of power, honor and love.

Adventurers traveled long distances to get the best of gems they could find. What is not known is that at one time India was the primary source for magnificent diamonds, including the famed Hope Diamond on display at the Smithsonian in Washington D.C.The Indian aristocracy kept the best for themselves and traded the balance for emeralds, rubies, sapphires, spinels and pearls from all corners of the earth.

Quality was paramount. Only the finest gems and purest gold would evoke maximum power to honor the gods and serve as talismans to ward off evil. Gemologists were valued members of most royal courts in India. The Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb (reign 1658–1707) had three in his entourage: one to care for the gems, a second to estimate their value, and the third to grade them and detect treated gems or imitations. Gemological knowledge was passed from father to son for generations, but also taught in texts such as the notorious Kama Sutra.emeralds

“The treasury has its source in the mines; from the treasury the Army comes into being, with the Treasury and the Army, the Earth is obtained…..” So wrote Indian statesman Kautilya in his 4th century Arthashastra, a how-to guide for managing an empire. Since antiquity, the most important mines were diamonds. And the most ancient of India’s three main diamond-producing areas were near the legendary fortress city of Golconda. The exact locations were a closely guarded secret that promised a horrible death for any who revealed it. Golconda was the center for trade in diamonds, launching caravans as large as 10,000 camels and oxen to travel across Asia

According to the Indian life science Ayurveda, wearing a diamond will guarantee long life, endurance and beauty. The thin, flat diamonds seen in historical Indian jewelry are typically slices cleaved from the original rough, many with flat facets polished around their edges. Not until the 19th century did brilliant cut diamonds begin to appear in India, as finished stones and faceting techniques arrived from Europe.

Many spectacular diamonds originated from Indian mines. These include the legendary 105 carat Koh-i-Noor Diamond, now in the British Crown Jewels, and the ill-fated 45 carat blue Hope Diamond, which brought misery to many before Harry Winston donated it to the Smithsonian Institution in 1958. Much of what has been written about the tragedies that fell upon the owners of the Hope Diamond, have been exaggerated at best. It makes for great reading though.

Today, the Golconda mining region is largely exhausted. It is estimated that the Indian mines produced at least 12 million carats over more than 2,000 years. Yet even as these mines waned, the discovery of diamonds in Brazil in the early 1700s and then South Africa in the late 1860s brought a continued supply to India’s royal connoisseurs.

I have had many customers from India, and the young women still receive for wedding presents,  22kt gold embedded with some of the most beautiful diamonds, rubies, sapphires, and emeralds I have seen in a long time. All the stones are near flawless and are in necklaces and rings primarily. The bracelets are usually very solid and 22kt bangles. Two can easily weight 45 grams. There are 31.1 grams in a troy ounce. These gifts are required by family members and friends and if you do not come forth with the goods, that will not bode well for you.

These young women come in here to sell their bounty. I asked them why, the first one I saw was exquisite, and could not help myself, I said why would you even consider selling this. Her answer was very simple, my husband and I would rather have cash and where would I wear this? OK, she had a point but me being so adoring of gemstones did not think any further than that. This necklace was closer to a bib. Intricate 22 kt gold and the most gorgeous of gemstones. Almost nine times out of ten, the items brought in  were diamonds, rubies, emeralds, and blue sapphire. What they usually keep are the bangles unless they were given a dozen or so. Now these are young women, the older generation do not come in here to sell, ever.

One young couple brought their items in and asked me if I could weigh them, I said yes, and what they were doing was getting a weight on all the gold in the items, putting a dollar price based on the gold  and 2.3 percent is to be given as charitable donation, I was told. Based on the weight of all these it would appear someone is going to be on the receiving end of a hefty donation. They have made three trips in here. Now understand my job is to buy it, not weigh it but I do it as a courtesy because one day they will sell off some of it.

I am first to admit some of the most beautiful items have been from India. Rings, bracelets, chains, didn’t matter. The workmanship is impeccable. Each piece is a work of art, and to be admired.

Recommendations for luxury items $$$

I am obligated to do a word press for our company which is based on precious metals and/or fine jewelry. So that page is limited to a subject that somehow relates to what we do. So I do the most outrageous jewelry items I can find, but for you I have these luxury items, and you can thank me later for saving you time with your Christmas shopping.

Make a splash this winter by gifting the most expensive sunglasses in the world. Designed by Dolce & Gabbana, this stunning pair features a gold frame that provides the bling and brown tinted glasses that offer the cool quotient. But at $383,609, it will blow a hole into your holiday shopping budget for the next 30 years.. Do not take these glasses off , should you set them down and walk away, I assure you they will not be there when you get back. One hopes they come with UV ray protection, and they are not just a fashion statement, tongue in cheek.dg

Another gift was a first edition set of Winnie the Pooh books and apparently there are unopened pages? Now book lovers, and I am one of them would love these, the price tag is $37,500.  So ok, that is high in fact very high, but these are books!! You don’t want to put these on the coffee table, they need a special place where no one can touch them, just look at them!!114644comp

The $10,000 crystal boots from YSL, are not for everyone, in fact I can’t think of anyone who would wear them, but rest assured someone will purchase these. Why, I have no idea. Does the name Zsa Zsa Boom Boom fit here.941301_in_pp

We have Philip Botanical Amber Shampoo in Swarovski covered containers, The shampoo reputed to be the best in the world is priced at $1875. Do not spill this in the shower, I repeat, do not spill this shampoo anywhere, and don’t let the kids give the dog a bath in this. The dog will however have the shiniest coat on the block. images (30)

We also have a $50,000 Tahitian Pearl and Diamond necklace from Tiffany. That price tag is no big surprise. And it is gorgeous. If I put this on I will not take it off, ever.shopping

I found something for the doggies or kitties in our households. a Louis Vuitton travel bag, for only $2500.00. Somewhere a  doggie or kittie is in the Louis Vuitton and you are carrying a 10 year old leather look alike bag,  doesn’t seem fair does it.images (29)

We also have for those who have dry skin, La Mer face cream, $1895.00 for 500 ml. Not to be used on hands, legs, or arms, get Jergens for that, in fact you will have to buy cheap for the rest of the body if you purchase La Mer for the face. This is the kind of cream that a little goes a long way, not to be scooped up in your hand and slathered on the body. A woman came home, found her husband in his easy chair doing just that with her La Mer, she shot him on the spot.images (28)

I saved the best for last. Josephs Toiletries has the finest toilet paper in the world, 25 sheets for $100, perhaps we should not refer to this as paper, but tissue.  Of course each sheet is moist with some alluring fresh fragrance, and it must leave your bum smelling as if you had a lovely spring bouquet of flowers growing from it. Charmin pales in comparison does it not, and our champion endorser is none other than Gwyneth Paltrow. Not too sure what planet she is from, but its not this one, she appears not to have a clue what is going on in the world, Earth that is. I hear she has children, wonder how that happened. WHAT-1200x600

And so, my dear friends, that is my list of luxury items for the holiday year, 2017. A couple of these are not so nuts but the toilet tissue is.

Today just seemed the right day to do fluff. That is where my brain is today.

Being Prepared for a Natural Disaster

Recent natural catastrophes from hurricanes to western wildfires are a fresh reminder that disaster can strike any time. An no area of the country is immune, when you factor in the threat  of tornadoes, earthquakes and human disasters like toxic spills. While the circumstances may differ, there’s one tip that every person needs to take from all these situations: how to pack a “go bag.”t shirts

A go bag is a packed case that you grab on your way out the door, and that will help keep you safe and comfortable in the coming hours and days. Stopping to hunt for your medications or other important needs, can cost you critical seconds in an evacuation. Pack a separate go bag for yourself and every member of your household, and keep them stored in the same location.jeans

Here are recommendations from people who had prepared their go bag:

Pack an extra phone charger in case you’re fortunate enough to have electricity, and a portable battery pack in case you’re not, Also stash a long-lasting LED flashlight. Pack a small hand-cranked or battery-operated AM/FM radio with (extra batteries).flashlightbatteries

Personal needs:

While getting ready for a typical day list every toiletry you use, then buy a travel sized version of the same items. Pack backup eyeglasses, first aid-kit, baby wipes and a multipurpose tool with a knife and can opener. Like a Swiss Army knife.toiletries

Clothing:

Pack about three days worth . Including layers you can add or remove, plus lightweight rain gear and waterproof boots.rain boots

Your meds

Not knowing how long it might be before you can get to a pharmacy, you might want to pack a couple of weeks worth, just in case and then you will not need to worry about only having a few days worth of medications.  If you need larger items, such as oxygen tank, make sure you have a portable version.medication

The perfect bag is small and portable. A backpack is ideal, but a lightweight suitcase with wheels will so as well. Just remember whatever type of bag you decide on you may be literally running with it. Consider this when deciding on a go bag.socks and sneakers

This is one item rarely mentioned but is as important as anything else, maybe more so, have a zip lock water proof bag with photocopies of your birth certificate, driver’s license, social security card, Insurance cards, whether health or home, power of attorney and a will, any adoption or naturalization certificates, medical immunization records, and information about your ATM and credit cards. This is a lot to gather but you only need to do it once, and you are set. ATMinsurance forms

Bottled water is essential, you may be in a situation where there is none or the water is not safe to drink. Granola and energy bars are great, they are small and filling and preferable to candy bars.granola bar imagesbottled water

As for cash, have small bills and a roll of quarters. If you ever have to use a vending machine you don’t want to be asking other equally desperate people for change.quarters

All the items above are relatively easy to put together and you will be so glad you took the time to do it. And  you will be prepared, and if there is something else you can think of add it to the list. cash

Sapphire, Birthstone for September

Sapphire is the most precious and valuable blue gemstone. It is a very desirable gemstone due to its excellent color, hardness, durability, and luster. In the gem trade, Sapphire without any color prefix refers to the blue variety of the mineral Corundum. However, the term Sapphire encompasses all other gem varieties and colors of Corundum as well, excluding Ruby, the red variety of Corundum, which has its own name since antiquity.yellow sapphire

The most valuable color of Sapphire is a cornflower blue color, known as Kashmir Sapphire or Cornflower Blue Sapphire. Another extremely valuable Sapphire form is the very rare, orange-pink Padparadschah. An exotic type of sapphire, known as Color Changing Sapphire, displays a different color depending on its lighting. In natural light, Color Changing Sapphire is blue, but in artificial light, it is violet. (This effect is the same phenomenon well-known in the gemstone Alexandrite). Yellow and pink Sapphire have recently become very popular, and are now often seen in jewelry.white msapphire

Sapphire often contains minor inclusions of tiny slender Rutile needles. When present, these inclusions decrease the transparency of a stone and are known as silk. When in dense, parallel groupings, these inclusions can actually enhance by allowing polished Sapphires to exhibit asterism. Sapphire gems displaying asterism are known as “Star Sapphire“, and these can be highly prized. Star Sapphire exists in six ray stars, though twelve ray stars are also knownmulti color sapphire

.Sapphire is a tough and durable gem, and the only natural gemstone harder than Sapphire is Diamond. Despite this, Sapphire is still subject to chipping and fracture if handled roughly, and care should be taken to ensure it is properly handled. Sapphire was first synthesized in 1902. The process of creating synthetic Sapphire is known as the Verneuil process. Only experts can distinguish between natural and synthetic Sapphire.padparadscha sapphire ring

Sapphire is one of the most popular gemstones, and is used extensively in Jewelry. Fine colored Sapphire with a deep blue color and excellent transparency can reach several thousand dollars a carat. The blue variety is most often used in jewelry, but the yellow, pink, and orange “fancies” have recently become very popular. Green and light blue Sapphires are also known, but are less commonly used in jewelry. Opaque Black Sapphire is also used a minor gemstone.

Sapphire is used in all forms of jewelry, including bracelets, necklaces, rings, and earrings. It is used both as centerpiece gemstone in pendants and rings, as well as a secondary stone to complement other gemstones such as Diamonds. Star Sapphires are polished as cabochons, and, if clear, are extremely valuable.star-sapphire-large_info

The rare orange-pink variety, known as Padparadschah, can be even more valuable than fine blue Sapphire. Blue Sapphire is sometimes carved into cameos or small figures, especially the less transparent material.download (27)

Lab Sapphires have the same  physical  properties as the from the earth Sapphire, but free of any inclusions, and will test positive as a Sapphire.  These stones are not inexpensive. To give Sapphire crystals the same pressure and heat as an earth grown Sapphire endured is not easy and very time consuming. But, they are at least more affordable in larger sizes than the from the earth stones, which can be more per carat than a diamond.  Sapphire comes in yellow, orange, green, black, white, purple, pink and black. Sapphire will usually receive treatment to even out the color of the stone. This does not detract from the value of the stone. purple sapphire

Sapphire is one of the most beloved of all gemstones.  The Sapphire is popular, and many times used as an engagement ring, and the blue sapphire was always  considered a luxury item for the affluent only.  The blue of the Sapphire is like no other blue, but the other colors of the Sapphire are gaining in popularity because the physical properties are identical to the blue, and with a rainbow of colors, the choice is yours.ceylon sapphire

Emerald, birthstone for May

Emerald is the bluish green to green form of Beryl, a mineral species that also includes Aquamarine, and Morganite. Gem experts differ on the degree of green that makes one stone an emerald and another stone a less-expensive green beryl. Most gemologists, gemological laboratories, and colored stone dealers call a stone green beryl when its color is “too light” for it to be classified as emerald. Even among that group, however, there’s a difference of opinion about what’s considered “too light.”hardy ring

As the gem of spring, emerald is the perfect choice as the birthstone for the month of May. It’s also the gem of the twentieth and thirty-fifth wedding anniversaries.luxurious-2-carat-green-emerald-and-diamond-classic-engagement-ring-in-rose-gold

ANCIENT EGYPT

The first known emerald mines were in Egypt. It is believed that these mines were worked as early as 3500BC.

Emerald sets the standard for any green gemstone. The oldest known Emerald is 2.97 billion years old and it is from South Africa.

Emerald has many special qualities, but colored stone professionals generally agree that emeralds are, most of all, about color. Emerald has been the standard for green among colored stones for thousands of years.emerald two

As with other colored stones, it requires a well-trained eye to recognize the sometimes subtle variations that make significant differences in emerald value. This is especially true in the higher qualities.

The intensity of the green in a fine emerald is without its equal in nature. There is nothing like it. The most desirable Emerald colors is blue green to green, without inclusions, and clear, no zoning. Emeralds typically contain inclusions that are visible to the unaided eye. Because of this, trade members and some consumers understand and accept the presence of inclusions in emeralds. Eye-clean emeralds are especially valuable because they’re so rare.garnet t

Four characteristics of emerald crystals make them difficult to cut. First, almost all emeralds have significant fractures (sometimes called fissures in the trade). A cutter must design the cut to minimize the effect of those fractures on the finished stone.

The second factor is due partly to those inherent fractures: Emeralds are more brittle than a gem like corundum. This makes them vulnerable to damage during cutting, polishing, and setting, or even during careless daily wear. The emerald cut can help protect against damage because the vulnerable corners are faceted and provide a comparatively safe place for prongs.emerald earrings

Third, because color is so important in establishing an emerald’s value, the cut must maximize the effect of hue, tone, and saturation. The cutter can affect color by adjusting an emerald’s proportions and number of facets. The cutter can darken a pale stone with a deep cut, a small table, and fewer facets, or lighten a dark stone with a shallow cut, a large table, and additional facets.

Emerald Cut Ring

As the name suggests, the emerald cut is the most common cut for emeralds. Courtesy Ronald Ringsrud Co.

Fourth, the bluish green to yellowish green dichroism of many emerald crystals encourages the cutter to orient the table so it’s perpendicular to the crystal’s length. That way, the more apparent color in the cut gem is the bluish green that so many emerald lovers prize.diamonds and tsavorite

Colombian rough is especially challenging due to the distribution of coloring agents during formation. Its color is more intense closer to the surface. Without careful planning and cutting, the finished stone might be much lighter in color than the original material.

Carat Weight
Fashioned emeralds come in a wide range of sizes. There are emeralds in museums and private collections that weigh hundreds of carats. At the other extreme are tiny emeralds that weigh fractions of a carat.emerald

The Sandawana emerald mine in Zimbabwe is known for its tiny, yet vividly colored stones. Its emeralds are as small as 1 mm square, but they’re still intensely green. The mine’s cut stones average about 0.05 to 0.25 carat, and rarely weigh more than 1.50 carats. Popular jewelry sizes are usually somewhere in between.

The smallest sizes range from 1 mm to 5 mm, with weights from 0.02 to 0.50 carat, while 1 to 5 carat stones are popular as center stones.  Prestigious pieces of jewelry can include emeralds that weigh over 20 carats.

Popular Gemstone, the Sapphire

Blue sapphire belongs to the mineral species corundum. It can be a pure blue but ranges from greenish blue to violetish blue. The name “sapphire” can also apply to any corundum ethical-sapphires.

Besides the  blue sapphire and ruby, the corundum family also includes so-called “fancy sapphires.” They come in violet, green, yellow, orange, pink, purple, and intermediate hues. There are also “parti-colored” sapphires that show combinations of different colors. Some stones exhibit the phenomenon known as color change, most often going from blue in daylight or fluorescent lighting to purple under incandescent light. Sapphires can even be gray, black, or brown.um that’s not red and doesn’t qualify as ruby, another corundum variety.

Fancy Sapphires are generally less available than the blue Sapphires. In addition it is rare to find a large stone in the fancy Sapphires. Nevertheless fancy Sapphires offers a rainbow of options for those who favor something out of the ordinary. purple sapphire

The mineral corundum is composed of aluminum and oxygen and it requires a growth environment free of silicon, but silicon is a very common element making pure corundum hard to find, in its purest state corundum is colorless. Colorless corundum could be used as a substitute for diamonds. They are now making a comeback and used as accent stones. The white sapphire has a lot of brilliance and sparkle and make beautiful jewelry.white msapphire

When trace elements of iron and titanium occur you have blue sapphires. The more iron in the corundum the bluer the sapphire. Chromium causes red, hence the ruby and pink sapphires. padparadscha sapphire ring

In 1990’s discoveries in Madagascar and East Africa brought widespread popularity of colored Sapphires. This brought about orange, yellow, pink and purple Sapphires. All the colors appealed to jewelry designers everywhere.spessartite garnet 5

Corundum can also show a phenomenon called asterism. When  the corundum is placed in the light a six point star is seen, and this is from the white light reflecting from the  tiny oriented needle like inclusions within the stone, hence the star sapphire and star ruby.star-sapphire-large_info

Another phenomenon is the color change sapphire which is different colors depending on the light source. This adds a special dimension to the already amazing corundum family of gemstones. download (31)

The blue and fancy sapphires come from mainly Tanzania, Madagascar, Australia, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar , formerly Burma. download (27)

Sapphires are part of the corundum family of gemstones, ranking 9 on the Mohs scale of hardness. This is a durable gemstone, but care should still be given to any natural gemstone. It is the birthstone for September. ring of ceylon sjapphire

Sapphires are relatively clear gemstones but even those of value with high color concentration with inclusions can still bring a high price, but for sure have far less inclusions that the ruby.ceylon sapphire

The fact we get phenomenal gemstones of every color from earth has always been such an overwhelming factor and then add as years go by the new discoveries that have been buried for million of years. You do not have to even like jewelry or gemstones but the sheer miracle of these gorgeous minerals found in our earth buried for millions and millions of years has to astound anyone interested in what our great planet Earth has to offer.

Sterling silver vs gold

Sterling Silver is shiny and is the most reflective of all the elements, which makes it useful for mirrors, telescopes, solar cells, and microscopes. Polished silver  reflects 95% of the visible light spectrum, but a poor reflector of ultraviolet light.silver bullion

Silver was one of the first metals to be discovered and around 3000 BC mankind learned to separate it from lead, although silver objects have been discovered as far back as 4,000 B.C. It is believed silver was first discovered around 5,000 BC.download (21)

Silver can exist in its native state. In other words, nuggets or crystals of pure silver exist in nature. Silver also occurs as a natural alloy with gold that is called electrum. Silver commonly occurs in copper, lead, and zinc ores.IMG-20160608-WA0003

Silver metal is not toxic to humans. In fact, it can be used as a food decoration. However, most silver salts are toxic. Silver is germicidal, meaning it kills bacteria and other lower organisms.images (92)

The most common form of silver is 92.5% meaning the balance is usually copper. The primary source of silver today is the New World. Mexico is the leading producer, followed by Peru. The United States, Canada, Russia, and Australia also produce silver. Around two-thirds of the silver obtained today is a by-product of copper, lead, and zinc mining.tiffany necklaces

It is considered a precious metal but sells for far below the other two precious metals, gold and platinum. There was a time when silver was more valuable than gold, but at present it sells for far below gold. Today at this moment gold is $1346.10 per ounce for .999 pure gold and silver is $19.74 for .999 pure silver. This is the reason it can be used so cheaply in jewelry making. Although there are some designers who can still sell their jewelry at top dollar because of the name. Tiffany, David Yurman, John Hardy, Lagos, to name a few. Their designs are known throughout the world and have a hefty price tag when compared to non brand silver jewelry. Jewelry lovers are willing to pay for example, $750.00 for a David Yurman ring that is 90% silver with a touch of gold, and gemstones, and if there are diamonds in the setting the price can go to over $1000.00. You are paying for a name, although the items are beautifully designed and are a substantial number of grams, you are paying for a status symbol.lagos ring

If you have the money to spend and you love sterling silver these are the designers to go to for a top notch piece of jewelry. Jewelers have somehow convinced a major portion of the public that silver being a precious metal is close to the value of gold and they will try to sell it as such. Certain well known jewelry chains do just that. The fact that a ring may have 10 grams of silver and a gemstone does not justify hundreds of dollars, but they will charge it anyway and when the buyer considers selling his item down the road he finds out that the metal is worth a few dollars. Only the previously mentioned designers can bring about a decent price when selling a pre owned item, the name of the jewelry store chain has no bearing whatsoever on the value of the item. DP0812201417212211M

Jewelers also use diamonds in silver jewelry because it is more affordable to the general public when an individual would never be able to afford said item in gold. They charge less than they would for a gold ring, but what they charge for silver is still outrageous. Silver is still silver no matter who is selling . Tiffany key necklace

If a jewelry lover prefers silver, all the better for them as they will spend far less money than the same bracelet, ring, earrings, or necklace in gold. The same for gold or silver bullion. An ounce of pure silver will be whatever silver is selling for that day plus a premium, same for pure gold, it’s all a matter of what one can afford. download (20)

So silver is a precious metal but the price tag is very cheap when compared to gold. Gold simply has and for most of history has much more appeal and  even sells for more than platinum these days,  another little known fact among purchasers of precious metals, whether it is  jewelry or bullion. hardy ringThe truth is the higher end jewelry items in silver are more detailed and will retain more value through the years.James Avery is another example of Sterling Silver jewelry that is detailed, made in the US and charms is the main focus of the line. The items can be sold for more than silver weight because it is James Avery. When it gets down to it, it is still up to the buyer what precious metal he or she prefers, and can afford.04366316_zi_sterling_sil

The Beauty of Rose Gold

Rose gold’s history goes back to Russia in the 19th Century. It was called Russian gold. It’s popularity spread across Europe, and in 1921 Jewelry lovers fell in the US fell in love with rose gold when Cartier introduced the Trinity ring. A luminary writer of that era, Jacques Cocteau gave high praise for the Trinity ring composed of rose, yellow, and white gold bands in one ring. cartier trinity ring

Then  the monochromatic style came into favor and platinum’s popularity rose and yellow and rose gold were no longer favored. The “icy” white of platinum with diamonds became the trend. Then when Germany invaded Poland in 1939 Platinum became a strategic mineral in the war effort and many countries prohibited its use during the war. Hence, gold was back in favor with designers and jewelry lovers. rose gold bangles

There has been a large rise in the popularity of rose gold today since the retro period. Rose gold looks good on every skin tone. It is especially lovely with certain gemstones. It brings out the beauty of a Morganite, that is peachy pink in color, and in rose gold it compliments both. Because of this stone’s peachy pink tones it is washed out when set in silver or yellow gold, the rose gold is reflected off the stone and vice versa, this is a stunning combination. An aquamarine in the Beryl family of gemstones as is the Morganite is equally beautiful in rose gold. Because of it’s light aqua blue color, it is especially vivid set against rose gold, the gold and the aqua become more intense in color.rose gold and morganite

Tiffany today has seen the popularity grow and devoted an entire line of jewelry strictly in rose gold. They have taken some of their classics and made them in rose gold as well as creating newer pieces in rose gold. Rose gold and diamonds is another lovely combination. It gives the diamond a softness rather than a cold austere look. It is the warmth of the the rose shade that is flattering to most natural gemstones. rose gold ring

One of the prettiest combinations is the Ruby and rose gold. It is a combination that is breathtaking The beauty of the red Ruby and the rose gold is most flattering, as is the pink diamond set in rose gold. Tanzanite, especially the blueberry Tanzanite is gorgeous in the rose gold setting. Emeralds, especially the Colombian emerald and rose gold is a very flattering combination. ruby and rose gold

LeVian a designer of high end jewelry pieces known for their chocolate diamonds in their items, have been using rose gold for years and have been very successful. Rose gold has an understated elegance, and  not the bling factor of white or yellow gold. It would seem that any solitaire stone set in rose gold does not need any additional stones, just the hue of a natural faceted gemstone and the rose gold says it all. It is a combination that is hard to beat. rose gold and square aquamarinr

When the haute couture runways showed jewelry in rose gold, it started the trend back to the popularity of rose gold.
